In collaboration with Clarkes Design & Construct
Maritimo are world class ship builders and specialise in prestige motor yachts that are delivered worldwide.
They have precise requirements when it comes to manufacturing and their facilities are first in class. In conjunction with the design and fabrication teams at Clarkes Design & Construct, we were tasked with designing a unique steel framed building that could house Maritimo’s fabrication and manufacturing processes under one roof.
The sheer size of this building and ensuring it would remain stable with minimal deflection or sway was our biggest challenge, high precision gantry cranes operate within the facility and standing at over 15m in height (5 storey building) and having enormous door openings meant that we have very little room to locate structure.
In addition to the design constraints, the Maritimo team were also working to a tight deadline. The opening of their new facility needed to coincide with the launch of their new luxury 60ft motor cruiser.
We undertook an incredibly detailed analysis of the loading conditions for this project, with particular attention paid to the wind loads and potential for surrounding buildings to provide possible shielding. We were then able to produce a full 3D structural model of the portal frame and bracing components. Due to the size of the structure, and it essentially being ‘lightweight’, it was critical that bracing frames on the corners of the structure were held in position with substantial footings to prevent the entire structure lifting off.
All design scenarios were achieved through accurate and refined modelling techniques combined with many years of experience with these types of structures. Clarkes Design & Construct were able to deliver a cost effect design, on time, to their client.
We’ve worked with NGS now for many years and their attention to detail and refined designs give the Clarkes team an advantage over our competitors.Andrew Clarke
