Feature Project

Silkwood School

Silkwood School is located in the spectacular Gold Coast hinterland and it was a fantastic opportunity for NGS to be involved in the design of their signature building that houses student classrooms, teachers staff rooms, and multi-disciplinary workspaces.

The Architect designed a very slim form building that sat neatly into a cut-out hill and is intended to disappear into the tree canopy whilst giving students a grand view of the natural landscape.

Challenge

Given the large building footprint it was importance that the structure be repetitive for ease of construction and have reduced member sizes to fit with the architectural intent.

We had to balance the structural integrity of the building with the slim Architectural elevations and profiles. It all needed to be maintained without over complicating the fabrication and construction of the steelwork.

Solutions

The time-lapse video below prepared by Richards Steel Fabricators demonstrates how, through repetition, we were able to maintain slim structural profiles and also allow the construction team to easily assemble the components to create the experience of a vast, open floor plan.

The curves in this design created challenges but NGS were able to breakdown the project into manageable components, a very pragmatic and experienced approach.
